How do I Choose a Masonry Contractor?

We often hear stories from friends about contractors who did not fulfill mutual agreements, dragged on a job endlessly, or incurred unnecessary expenses. How to avoid this type of situation? When planning an exterior home renovation, like a tuck point masonry job, both the selection of the tuck pointing contractors and the subsequent handling of the project are very important – from the initial consultation and signing a contract to complying with all of the terms. What should you pay special attention to when choosing a masonry contractor? Here are some tips.

Tuckpointing Contractor

1. Get the necessary information on tuckpointing techniques and materials

The more you are familiar with the specifics of the planned construction works, the easier it is to avoid fraudulent companies. Although you will certainly not become a masonry expert in a short time, you will know better how to talk to masonry contractors, what to require, and what details to pay attention to.

Both tips from specialist websites will be useful, as well as advice from friends who know at least a little about masonry matters or had carried out similar works on their properties. Basic knowledge of the subject will also help you choose the appropriate materials for whatever job your home may need.

2. Make a cost estimate

The next step is researching average prices of the materials and labor in your area. Tuck pointing contractors’ rates vary by state and city.

If you’re looking for qualified masonry contractors in Chicago consider hiring Casey Tuckpointing. We’re reliable and friendly local experts who will help you with any masonry needs you may have.

You can call us (847) 962-6309 for a clear cost estimate and we’ll work together to make a plan that fits your budget. We’ll provide you with a quote and discuss materials and determine what needs to be done.

3. Review testimonials from former clients

This is probably the most common way to find any construction crew. Knowing that someone in your area is satisfied with the work of a given company builds trust and credibility. People are eager to share their observations and opinions, but it is also worth using common sense and not trusting only one source of information. Carefully explore a company’s website and take a look at pictures of previous construction projects.

Let’s also not forget that you can never be 100% sure that a given specialist will take up any job. Some companies may specialize in specific techniques or technical methods better than others. Much also depends on our communication with these professionals.

With Casey Tuckpointing you won’t have to worry about delays or any other issues. Review our testimonials and see what your neighbors have to say about the quality of our work and the customer service we provide.

It was a pleasure doing business with Mr. Art from Casey Tuckpointing. My overall experience with them was great. I needed a lintel replacement, chimney repair and stucco job done on my 3 story high backyard wall and garage wall in busy part of Chicago city. I explain to Mr. Art what I needed to be done and he did exactly what I needed and suggested more favorable ideas which I was pleased with. My expectation of the completed job was exceedingly beyond what I thought, it was great and well done. I have to say they kept the side job clean when everything was completed. The crew was very courteous, professional and hard workers. His price was also reasonable and fair. I would definitely use him in the future and recommend him to anyone else. Five stars & thumbs up in my book.read more

Art, his father, Casey and their crew did a great job tuckpointing and preforming other brick work to our 100 year old home. After Art provided me the estimate and secured the permit, they started work within a week. The owner, Casey worked with the crew throughout the week that they were there. Art and his crew went beyond the scope of the estimate and performed some additional work the building needed. I found Art to be very trustworthy. He verbally quoted me an amount for the additional work that needed to be done and that was exactly the amount he charged. The employees at Casey Tuckpointing are old school and work as a team. They know what a honest day of work is. I watched the entire job from beginning to end and was very impressed by the pride they took in their workmanship. They did such a great job that you can’t tell which bricks were installed a hundred years ago and which were installed last week. It blends beautifully! I highly recommend Casey Tuckpointing!read more

Very accommodating! Most importantly they did exactly what they said they would do, no surprises. We would definitely use Casey Tuckpointing again for future projects. Now I can sleep at night! My chimney was in need of repair, and I kept putting it off as I never found a company I felt had my best interest at heart, and would not fleece me . So when I spotted Casey's crew across the street, I was totally impressed with their work standard and made the decision to get an estimate. Not only did I get a fantastic estimate, I also got some advice on my front porch broken slabs, another project on the long finger. So the next day I was setup for my new chimney, and I added the porch repair. Workers showed up early, got right down to business, what a professional, organized crew. I am so impressed with my new chimney and my porch redo. Amazing hard workers. Great clean up and so respectful of the neighbors property. I am so Blessed to have spotted them and will definitely be using them again. Thank you so much. Your work ethic and craftsmanship is amazing. Whenever the wind blows, I wont be running to see if my chimney is OK, now I can finally relax.read more

I highly recommend Casey Tuckpointing for a job completed way beyond my expectations. A car crashed into our curved perimeter wall around our townhome and a large section was damaged and was moved off the foundation. I received a favorable quote for demo & rebuild the damaged portion of the wall that included permitting, material & labor shortly after the Casey Tuckpointing owner made an onsite visit. Once the contract was inked & permit was in place, the work was scheduled. The crew was punctual & gave me play by play so I always knew what was targeted for completion by the end of each day. The work was done expertly and efficiently from demo of brick and coping stones to orderly rebuild with new bricks matched compatibly to existing ones that you can't distinguish the new section from the new one & masonry appearance is blended perfectly. The crew was veey experienced grinding out and filling mortar evenly between bricks to avoid gaps. The work area was tidy and secured at the end of each day. Any neighbor concerns were managed and any questions I had about the process were always handled promptly and professionally. The crew worked some days in inclement weather (cold, windy) and around periods of rain/snow, promptly resuming work as soon as the precipitation ended. The results are stunning. Passersby have taken notice of the quality workmanship and have already hired Casey Tuckpointing for their masonry repair projects. I'm a tough critic and I'm fortunate that I chose Casey Tuckpointing from an internet search and placed my trust in Art & his seasoned crew to do quality masonry work and to honor the lofty claims made on their website. Job Well Done!!!read more

We hired Casey Tuckpointing to rebuild the north and west parapet walls, chimney, and tuckpoint the entire building as was necessary of our 100 year old landmark building. Over the years several other mason contractors worked on the building. None provided the knowledge and expertise as Casey Tuckpointing. They provided an exceptional service from their adherence to the building details in order to rebuild to the original specifications, securing the proper permits form the City, providing a work crew that were excellent craftsman, polite and extremely hard working, and returning the yard and surrounding area to perfect condition. Of the three bids obtained from contractors for the work, they were not the least expensive; however, they provided a detailed summary of the work to perform and extras that may result from the removal and rebuilding of the structure. I would not hesitate recommending Casey Tuckpointing. They returned the building to its original beauty.read more

Recently I needed to have tuck pointing and lentils replaced on my house, I've seen a lot of bad tuck pointing jobs and did a little research on how tuck pointing is supposed to be done. When I spoke to Casey I knew right away he knew what he was talking about. He gave me a fair price and the workmanship his mend did was impeccable. It looked like freshly paved brick as opposed to the tuck point jobs I've seen. If you want a proper tuck point job done, call Casey Tuckpointing and you can't go wrong.read more

Our Chicago masonry contractors are the best in the area and our previous customers will attest to our dedication and professionalism.

Always remember that performance on past projects goes hand in hand with a company’s reputation.

4. Ask for references and certificates

Although this is probably not a common practice, it is worth asking the company about its previous experience, certificates, as well as letters of recommendation from previous clients. Of course, even piles of such documents won’t guarantee the reliability of a certain team. However, if a company won’t be willing to provide such evidence upon request, it may foreshadow other problems in communication with the team, for example, the lack of respect for the client.

First of all, let’s find out about the company’s experience in masonry repairs. Because tuckpointing is such a rare and unique trade that requires skill and great attention to detail, it is crucial to hire a licensed and reputable company that will provide references upon request.

Casey Tuckpointing is a team of highly experienced masonry contractors in Chicago and will gladly assist you in any tuckpointing needs you may have.

5. Ask for a quote for the planned work

A reliable professional will not provide a quote based on a short phone call. A company can specify its rates for given services, but a personal visit and inspection will be necessary to prepare a clear-cut cost estimate. Contact at least a few teams or specialists to estimate the cost of the planned work. This does not oblige you to use the services of the specific companies, but will give you a better idea of the budget that your project will cost.

Let’s also watch out for contractors who are not precise when talking about money. An answer such as “We’ll see how much will come out.” should definitely raise concerns.

As one of the most trustworthy masonry contractors in Chicago, Casey Tuckpointing is transparent when it comes to pricing and project length.

Give Us a Call Today at (847) 962-6309 for a FREE ESTIMATE!

6. Countersign a contract

Regardless of the recommendations, certificates, and guaranteed professionalism – always sign a contract that will suit your needs and be as detailed as possible, so both parties know where they stand and what to expect up front. The more is written and agreed on paper, the easier it is to find solutions and work collaboratively.

Most contracts will include such information as:

  • scope of work,
  • cost estimate,
  • work schedule and the completion date,
  • payment plan,
  • warranty for the work performed,
  • who buys materials and who pays for them and when,
  • contractual penalties for delay in work.
